Different methods of childbirth
Normal delivery
In normal childbirth, i.e., lower birth, the baby is born through the birth canal and vagina. The child is in the mother’s womb in such a position that her head is attached to the mother’s hips. The child is born head first. Undercarriage begins spontaneously or by initiation in cases where the risks to the mother and fetus are greater than the risks associated with initiation.
In some cases, the mother’s perineum is not flexible enough to give birth or the tissue is feared to tear. In such a case, the doctor performs an episiotomy, i.e., a perineal incision in which the vagina is enlarged to facilitate labor.
There are many benefits to lower birth. For example, it prepares the baby to face the outside world. This does not happen in caesarean section, where the risk of needing a ventilator, for example, increases considerably. Another notable advantage is the microbiota of the birth canal through which the baby is born. The fact that the baby is not in contact with the microbiota can cause various allergy and other health problems at a later stage.
After a birth, the child comes into skin contact with his mother from the first moments of his life. The baby can also be breastfed immediately after delivery.
Well-groomed birth is the safest method of childbirth for both mother and child in most situations. In submarine delivery, major bleeding is usually avoided. The mother also recovers from childbirth faster than cesarean section.
Natural childbirth
Natural childbirth means childbirth, which, however, differs from “normal” childbirth in that it does not use anesthetics or pain relief. Also, artificial oxytocin is not used in natural childbirth to stimulate contractions, and doctors do not perform procedures such as episiotomy, or perineal surgery.
This method of childbirth focuses on the mother, her needs and choices – which is why natural childbirth is considered a very humane way of giving birth. When a woman wants to give birth naturally, she chooses the delivery environment herself, be it a hospital or a home.
Water birth
Water birth takes place in a bathtub or other pool. In water birth, the mother’s abdomen should be completely under water. The future father can also be the mother’s support in the pool at this important and intimate moment.
Water birth takes place in warm water, and the woman climbs into the pelvis when her uterus has opened about 5 cm. At this point, the mother should already be experiencing regular and intense contractions – more than 2 contractions every 10 minutes.
Squat birth
This method of childbirth is like natural childbirth, but the position of childbirth is different. Instead of lying in bed, the woman is in a squat position. In a squat position, childbirth often occurs very quickly.
Because the mother is in an upright position, the attraction of the earth speeds up the birth process. This delivery position may be more comfortable than a normal delivery position, i.e. lying on your back.
Suction cup or forceps delivery
If the baby’s condition is suspected to be impaired or the contractions weaken during childbirth, the baby can be helped to give birth by suction cup pulling. In this case, the doctor attaches a plastic or metal dome to the baby’s head to give the child a good grip to help him or her out. At the time of contraction, the mother makes an effort and the nursing staff gently pulls the baby with the aid of an aid.
Formerly commonly used forceps are now rarely used to assist in childbirth.
Leboyer childbirth, or gentle childbirth
Leboyer childbirth is also known as gentle childbirth, which is intended to bring a child into the world without causing him stress. Frédérick Leboyer, a French obstetrician, developed this technique, which seeks to avoid injuries and trauma when the baby is removed from the womb.
Underlying the idea of gentle childbirth is that a child should be born into a uterine environment. This means dim lighting, silence and a warm temperature. These factors reduce the radical difference between the inner and outer worlds of the uterus.
Cesarean section
Unlike the above-mentioned methods of childbirth, in a section, a child is born by surgery through an incision made in the lower abdomen of the mother. The doctor will cut an incision in the abdominal wall and uterine wall to get the baby out of the womb. Once the child has been removed through the incision, the placenta is also removed.
Cesarean section is performed when there is an increased risk of complications during the birth or if the birth that has begun cannot be completed safely with certainty.
Because the section is a surgical procedure, maternal recovery after childbirth is slower than after postpartum delivery.
Assisted home delivery
Increasingly, women are choosing home delivery as their method of delivery. A woman often feels safer and more liberated when giving birth at home. Home birth is a really painful way to give birth, but a woman is often prepared for the pain and sees it as part of the birth process. Humane childbirth
Humane childbirth refers more to ideology than to the method of childbirth itself. The mother acts as the protagonist of the delivery, whose decisions must be respected by the nursing staff. The medication is used only on medical grounds.
In its brevity, human childbirth means that childbirth is considered a normal physiological process that very rarely requires intervention.
